In her artistic practice, Hannah Kindler engages with the complexity of identity. She often takes on the roles of alter egos or avatars, allowing her to dissolve fixed societal attributions projected onto her. For this expansion of the “self,” she designs costumes in the form of intensely colored garments or masks. These garments envelop her own body, estranging it and shifting it into a new context. Oversized puppets also emerge. At the heart of her creative process lies an exploration of classical female representations and their portrayal in art. Thus, a cosmos of historically influenced figures arises, including Marys, muses, goddesses, or comic heroines, brought to life in photo and video works that expose role clichés. The characters and associated narratives oscillate between reality and fiction, creating associative spaces during reception that make conceivable a life of less restrictive reality.
Kindler’s “dress objects” are based on textile finds that she deconstructs in structure and reassembles into something new. Stitches, embroideries, and embellishments reveal the process of creation - sewing, which not only symbolizes traditional women’s craft but also the combination and coexistence of diversity.
Stereotypes of masculinity and femininity unexpectedly collide, blurring binary gender identities. At the same time, the found textile objects can provide information about the origin and production of the fabrics, as well as the trade relationships and political implications associated with them. Visible prints, patterns, and signs of wear point to the roots of culture and craftsmanship. In this way, comprehensive research into textile history forms the basis of each series of works. Furthermore, Kindler’s artistic practice, which often includes performances, is based on intensive research into the biography of a historical figure. Special attention is paid to the life stories of women and people from the LGBTIQ+ group (Lesbians, Intersex, Non-binary, Transgender and Other Gender-Diverse Individuals) who have overcome the obstacles of their time and restrictive living conditions to find an authentic self.
